Studying in a Catholic institution teaches its students about Christian values and in San Beda College, it makes it more special because they inculcate in us the Benedictine Core Values. These values guide us in everything we do and assure us that we will have a life worth living.
Praying has become something that I need to do because it is the key for me to do my tasks properly and in compliance to His teachings. We must never forget to communicate with Him through our prayers especially in times where He gives us a lot of blessings. Through praying, I know that He will guide me to apply what I have learned properly therefore I will be able to work effectively. Prayer and work are two things that should be tied together because it reminds us that we do not work only for ourselves but rather we work for Him as well. We must not only remember Him in times of trouble and problems. Working is also a fulfilment of what God wants us to do. As a Legal Management student, a very big responsibility is on me and a single mistake in applying our laws can create a huge dilemma so I always make it a habit to pray first before working or doing anything for I know that He will always be there to whisper to my ears the correct application of laws and the proper things to do. We must pray first before we work.
“God is in the sadness and the laughter, in the bitter and the sweet. There is a divine purpose behind everything — and therefore a divine presence in everything.”
Public service is what I grew up doing. Helping people in need are not new to me or even going to different places to reach out for them. It is an experience which broadened my mind about what is happening in our society, about what our society urgently needs.
We all have a calling from God to fulfil a commitment which we usually ignored. It is a commitment every person has to the community and our environment. It is a calling that needs to be answered by every individual in the world, whether rich or poor and this commitment is about helping our community in solving the social problems that we have for the goodness of all the children of God and take care of our mother earth which God has entrusted to us.
Many people are not able to get what was supposedly theirs. Many people experience abuses from the society. They are the ones who are not able to go to school, be nourished properly and even belong to a loving family. They are the unfortunate people who experiences the dark moments of life. People who suffer these endeavours tend to make their lives even worse by engaging themselves in crimes, prostitution, vices and the worst, disbelief in God. They lose hope on making their lives better. They lose hope on finding the right things to do for them to attain their dreams in life. But God never ceases to do something about these dilemmas. He makes a way on how to help His children and we are one of these ways. We are instruments of God which He created to help our community. I realized that we have a responsibility to our brothers and sisters. We must always support and help them even in our own little ways for this will become a big solution to social problems once everyone exerts effort in doing so. We must share what we have. We must not abuse others or take away from them what are rightfully theirs. We must value the equality that God has bestowed upon us. We must do justice to every individual in our society. Selfishness must not be encouraged but instead being Christ-centered shall be promoted for in this way we will all be guided to everything we do.
God may give us tough problems, God may give us challenges which we think has no more solutions but we must never give up on solving them. We must never lose hope in fixing them because God gave each of them for certain reasons. Reasons which will surely make us better persons who should be productive members of our society. It will also make us closer to God because through these problems He reminds us that He is there always watching on us. God will always be there no matter what we do and no matter what happens. He will always provide us a light which will lead us to the right path; a path leading to Him. God will always love us. With this, we must do our part and that is by having faith in Him, loving Him back and doing what we are supposed to do for our community. God is the light and the hope of all.
Also, education is very important. Being educated will make us understand everything that is happening around us. We will be able to contribute something to our society for its improvement and progress. As what our ancestors have said, education is the greatest treasure that our parents can give us. Education is important because it cures the problems of our society such as poverty and crimes. It also helps us work better and create opportunities that would be sufficient to provide our needs and to support our families. It makes us aware on how things happen around us and it avoids the abuses that other people do to those who are deprived of education. But most importantly, education is very important because it opens a window of opportunity for educated people to share what they know to the other people who are unable to study. Education is a continuous process of learning.
As we all know, our mother earth is starting to deteriorate due to the pollution which occurred due to what we do. We also tend to abuse our environment. It is about time that we wake up and be concern about our environment. We give importance to it and take care of it. Concern is a very essential factor in order to do this. We must see to it that we preserve our environment for the future generations and most especially for God who has given such blessing to us.
As what I have said in my previous reflection, obedience is a way of seeking God. We must give up our self-centeredness and change it to being Christ-centered by the obedience to His commandments and teachings. We must not think of doing something for our own betterment only regardless of its consequences but rather think if our acts would be in conformity to what God wants us to be and to do. We must always remember that our responsibility to seek God never ceases and we will be able to do it by listening to Him. We must discern our way to God and realize that He is our guide in life. We must trust Him for He knows what is right for us and He will always be there for us no matter what happens so we must obey Him. Furthermore, obedience is not limited to the commandments and teachings of God but also includes obedience to the community which usually creates rules and regulations to protect the rights of the people and provide for their penalties and such other things which may be necessary for the community. Trust must be established here also because without it, our community will be unorganized because no one will believe and obey those rules. We must follow these simple rules as well for the benefit of all.
Before obeying these things, especially those orders from other people in our community, we must first evaluate if such command is proper and will not do evil. We must discern on its purpose if it will be for the good of ourselves and the community and if not, we must not be afraid to correct others. Development of ourselves must also result from being obedient for it will make us better persons not only intellectually but also spiritually and emotionally. It will make our lives more peaceful and easier. We must also consider sharing our thoughts and experiences because there are times where commands are seen to be wrong because the person who gave it does not know anything about us. Sharing these things will enable them to evaluate what is good for us. We must also be willing to sacrifice and experience pain because not all orders are in favour of us but are still for the betterment of all. We must always remember that obedience is not a carrying of order but rather a total giving of self to God.
Silence is also relevant in life. It does not only mean quietness of the surrounding but most especially quietness of the heart, mind and spirit. It is something which is hard to achieve. We must will to be silent and discipline ourselves to be able to do it. It can exist in the midst of noise. Silence will bring us a sound leading to the Lord. It will make a room for the presence of God in our lives. It shall also improve our attentiveness and vigilance thus making us learn more and be better persons. It also gives us an attitude of openness which makes us ready to accept other people’s ideas and most of all welcome God. Silence makes us closer to God. Tagged with silence is listening. People usually connote listening as something done through the ear but in reality, we must listen through the ear of our hearts. Through listening, we will be able to build relationship thus it enables us to understand other people. It is also considered as the basis of obedience. It is a way of to find God whom we are seeking. It will enable us to examine issues and make ethical decisions and actions on problems.
Being boastful about yourself is not good. We must rather be humble about our life. Humility is reflected by decision of discretion, compassion, kindness, care and moderation. I learned that we must follow simple rules like those in school and our society. We must only prioritize what we need and not what we want. We must learn to obey others if they are right. We must we contented with what we have and share it with others. We must dress and speak simply. This is also bring a good connection with others for there will be understanding and a harmonious relationship between people. In life, we always experience having guests. As Filipinos, we are known to be hospitable which one of the Benedictine Values. I learned that we must give great care and concern to the poor for it is in them where Christ is received. Our guests should be given care by securing their rooms, beddings, food and anything they need. We must welcome them like how we would welcome Christ. When they leave, we must also send them on their way warmly.
In our society today, there had been a lot of violence and injustices. These things bar us from having peace not only in our society but also within ourselves. It is about time that we realize that we should do something about it before it is too late. Change is what we need and that change must start in ourselves. We must change into better persons by being responsible enough to follow laws and comply with our duties for this will bring great effects. Then we must encourage others to do this as well. We must also exert effort in bringing peace within ourselves. This can be done by removing every piece of hatred and anger in ourselves. We must try to fix this by talking to people who are involved. We must promote peace for it will unite our community and therefore bind every children of God to have faith in Him.
At the end of the day, we must assure ourselves that we apply these Benedictine Core Values to our lives to be able to live a Christ-centered life and to assure ourselves that we comply to His teachings and to what He wants us to do. We must love one another and be concerned with each other but most of all, we must have faith in God.
